Use all the ink in the cartridge !! Save Money

Continue to print even when your printer light comes on or you get a warning saying that your ink is low. Check the ink level in the cartridge and if it appears that there is some ink left, keep using it instead of changing the cartridge immediately. There is likely quite a bit of ink left in the cartridge; remember that the ink comes out in a spray so it doesn’t take much per page. Use it all and then shake the ink cartridge to break up any ink clogs.

You may get hundreds of extra pages out of a cartridge by doing this. Keep printing until the ink is almost completely gone (but be careful that you don’t run the printer with an empty cartridge).

Top Tips

If you don’t print very often, you can stretch the life of your inkjet cartridges by keeping the printer moving. Print a page or two at least once a week using both your colour and black ink cartridges. You can print something small (even a printer diagnostic test) to prevent the ink from drying up.

Another ink-saving tip is to power down your printer  after each use. Don’t merely switch it off or unplug it, but allow your printer to power down slowly and shut itself down. The print heads need to be in the right position while the printer is turned off to prevent the ink from drying up prematurely.

What does page yield mean ??

For most toner cartridges you will find an indication of how many pages it should print.
eg 3.5k would stand for a page yield or toner print capacity of 3500 pages.
This however is based on the manufacturers description of a 5% coverage.
So How does a 5% coverage print look? Take a look at the below explanation found on Wiki answers:
The following two paragraphs placed on an A4 or Letter-sized sheet of paper make up 5% coverage:

“For the purpose of cartridge yield measure, almost all printer manufacturers base their black ink/toner cartridge yields on 5% coverage. This means only 5% of the whole page is covered with ink or toner. 5% coverage implies basic type with no bold characters, no graphics and no pictures.

CMYK toners for colour laser printers and copiers base their cartridges yields on 20% to 35% coverage (5% to 7% per colour). In reality, if a document had a 100% fill, there would be 400% coverage. Tri-color inkjet/toner cartridges base their page yield on 15% coverage (5% per colour).”

Toner capacitys were implemented only as an indication to judge the average printing costs of a printer, to allow us a better way of comparing before we purchase, therefore if we were to print a full page of heavy text or colour (including images), this will greatly reduce the amount of pages a cartridge will print.

Think you got a great deal on a printer?
What’s the catch, you might have asked?  Most salesmen would say there is no catch.  They’d probably go into a rant about how the printer market has gotten more competitive, driving prices way down.  While that’s a true statement, it isn’t the primary reason for such inexpensive printers these days.

So, why are printers so inexpensive?  It’s pretty simple – printer manufacturers need you to buy their printer model so you’re forced into buying their outrageously-priced inkjet cartridges.
They don’t make any money on selling printers – they make their money by selling you the replacement ink cartridges.

It makes a lot of business sense when you think about it.  A consumer buys a printer every few years, but may buy ink as much as once every three months.  Printer manufacturers would much rather have this steady stream of income.  Consumers don’t factor ink cartridge costs into the equation when they buy a printer.  They look at the features and price tag.  Sure you’re getting a great printer and not paying a lot.  But if you use your printer on a fairly regular basis, the cost of ownership over a year or two soon begins to add up !!
